October brings cooler temperatures and a renewed sense of activity to the equestrian community throughout the Phoenix East Valley.

Horse shows, competitions, clinics, group rides, and other equestrian activities become much more appealing after Arizona’s long summer. For horse owners in Queen Creek, Mesa, Gilbert, Apache Junction, and San Tan Valley, now is the time to make sure horses are prepared for a busier fall schedule.

Conditioning should be one of your first considerations. Horses that exercised less during the summer shouldn’t suddenly return to demanding workouts or competition schedules. Gradually increase riding time and intensity while monitoring your horse’s breathing, movement, and recovery.

Transportation deserves attention as well. Before loading up for an event, inspect your trailer’s tires, flooring, lights, hitch, ventilation, and interior for potential problems. Make sure your horse is comfortable loading and unloading before event morning. Reducing unnecessary stress can make the entire experience more enjoyable for both horse and owner.

When horses from different properties gather together, health precautions become especially important. Avoid sharing water buckets and equipment between unfamiliar horses, monitor your horse for signs of illness, and talk with your veterinarian about appropriate vaccinations and preventative care based on your horse’s activities.

Hydration remains important even as temperatures become more comfortable. October in the Phoenix East Valley can still produce very warm afternoons. Bring plenty of water and provide opportunities for your horse to drink and rest throughout the day.

Older horses may need additional consideration. Senior horses can absolutely remain active when their health allows, but owners should recognize when competition, travel, or long days away from home are becoming physically difficult. Sometimes shortening an event schedule or allowing additional recovery time is the best choice.

Most of all, enjoy the season. Arizona’s equestrian community offers wonderful opportunities to spend time with horses and other people who share the same passion.
