October is one of the months horse owners across the Phoenix East Valley look forward to most.

After months of extreme summer temperatures, cooler mornings and evenings make it much more enjoyable to get back in the saddle. Whether you’re riding around Queen Creek, Mesa, Gilbert, Apache Junction, San Tan Valley, or exploring Arizona’s beautiful desert trails, a little preparation can help make every ride safer.

Start with your horse. If summer meant less riding and exercise, don’t assume your horse is immediately ready for a long trail ride. Gradually rebuild conditioning and pay attention to breathing, recovery time, stiffness, and overall energy. Senior horses may require even more time to return to longer rides.

Next, check your horse’s feet. Arizona’s dry conditions can contribute to cracking and chipping, while rocky desert terrain can expose hoof problems quickly. Make sure your horse is current with farrier care and consider the terrain you’ll encounter before leaving home.

Your tack deserves a safety inspection too. Check cinches, billets, stirrup leathers, reins, bridles, and stitching for signs of wear. Arizona heat and dry air can be hard on leather and other materials, so something that looked fine last spring may need attention before fall riding.

For longer rides, carry water, basic first-aid supplies, identification, and emergency contact information. Tell someone where you’re going and approximately when you expect to return. A charged cell phone is important, but don’t assume you’ll have reliable service everywhere.

Desert riding also presents unique hazards. Rocks, cactus, uneven terrain, wildlife, loose wire, and unexpected obstacles can quickly turn a relaxing ride into an emergency. Pay attention to trail conditions and don’t push a horse beyond its abilities.

Most importantly, know your horse. If something doesn’t seem right before you leave, postponing a ride is always an option.

October offers some wonderful opportunities to enjoy horses throughout the Phoenix East Valley. A few extra minutes of preparation can help ensure those adventures create the kind of memories you’ll want to keep.
