After months of intense Arizona heat, September gives horse owners across the Phoenix East Valley something exciting to look forward to: fall riding season.

In Queen Creek, Gilbert, Mesa, Apache Junction, and San Tan Valley, cooler mornings will gradually make longer rides and increased activity more comfortable. But if your horse spent much of the summer taking it easy, returning to a regular riding schedule should happen gradually.

Start by evaluating your horse’s current fitness level. A horse that was ridden only occasionally during the hottest months may have lost some cardiovascular fitness and muscle tone. Begin with walking and shorter riding sessions before adding extended trotting, hills, or more demanding arena work. Gradual conditioning gives muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments time to adjust.

September is also a great time to evaluate body condition. Arizona’s summer heat can affect horses differently. Some lose weight or muscle, while others gain weight because their activity decreases. Adjusting nutrition based on your horse’s current condition can help prepare them for a more active fall.

Don’t forget hoof care. The hot, dry conditions of a Phoenix East Valley summer can be tough on hooves. Check for cracks, chips, tenderness, or other changes and make sure your farrier schedule is current before increasing trail or arena activity.

Your tack deserves attention too. Inspect saddles, bridles, cinches, and other equipment that may have spent weeks exposed to heat, dust, and extremely dry conditions. Look for cracking, weakened stitching, or other damage before putting equipment back into regular use.

Senior horses require additional patience. An older horse may need more time to regain conditioning, and stiffness or soreness can become more noticeable when activity increases. Pay attention to how quickly your horse recovers after exercise and discuss concerning changes with your veterinarian.

Fall is one of the best times to enjoy horse ownership in the Phoenix East Valley. A little preparation in September can help you and your horse safely enjoy the beautiful riding weather ahead.
