Dos and Don’ts of Fruit and Vegetable Treats for Your Horse: Part 3

Many types of fruits can serve as a good treat for your horse. Here are a few more options that you may want to consider.

Melons

Melons, including watermelons, are safe for your horse to eat. In fact, your horse can eat both the flesh and the rind, though most prefer to eat just the juicy, sweet flesh. Pumpkins are also safe to feed to your horse, though you may want to avoid feeding the seeds to your horse. While most horses can digest the seeds without a problem, many do not care for the taste. As an added bonus, pumpkin is 90 percent water and is high in vitamin A. You can even use cooked pumpkin in horse treats as a special reward! If feeding melons with the rind, you should be sure to cut up the melon in order to prevent choking.

BananasBananas are also safe to feed to your horse. High in vitamins C and D as well as magnesium and potassium, bananas are easy for your horse to eat and to digest. Mashed banana can also be added to homemade treats to add a little extra sweet flavor. It is a good idea, however, to feed bananas in moderation and to monitor your horse after feeding it bananas for the first time just to be sure its body accepts the treat without issue.
