What to Look for in a Horse Trailer: Part 3 of 3

In this final installment of what to look for in a horse trailer, we will take a closer look at some of the specialty features that affect the overall function of the trailer.

Hitch Coupler

The hitch coupler is an essential component since it is how you will attach the trailer to your vehicle. Make sure all of the parts are there and in proper order. You should also make sure the safety chains are attached and are not damaged in any way.

Dividers and Bars

The dividers are used to separate the horses in the trailer. These should be securely in place, but capable of being moved and adjusted without trouble. Be sure to test the butt and breast bars, as well, to ensure they are solid and functioning properly.

Loading Gate

The loading gate will be used when loading the horse on and off of the trailer. Therefore, it needs to be able to open and close easily while providing a solid place for the horse to walk. The type of gate will also be important, as some loading gates require the horse to step up and back down when loading and unloading while others serve as a ramp. Consider your horse as well as your needs when determining which type is best for you.
